AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION 38 – THE PARTY

Many thanks to the jurors of American Illustration 38 for selecting my reportage illustration titled “Amsterdam Rush Hour” (above) that appeared in Lonely Planet magazine, for inclusion in the book and yearly exhibit. “The Party,” as it’s called, happened last night at the Angel Orensanz Foundation in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and it was a packed house. A big shout-out to Jordin Isip for his tireless work every year to make the exhibit and event happen – thank you for your contribution!

Studio 1482 illustrators Margaret Hurst (@margarethurstart) and Dominick Santise (@legendofthehead) joined me to celebrate the book launch, and illustration as a profession in general: what a fun evening. Many illustrators I’ve known and admired (and some I don’t know, but admire) were there, and it was great to see everyone out of their studios and socializing for an evening. MANY of my students from Parsons and Pratt, current and former, were mingling in the crowd as well, it was like a family reunion. Wonderful to hear from former students about their adventures post-graduation, and how they are making their way into this fantastic business called illustration.

I’m not that good at selfies, but here are a few photos from the event:

Here I am, pointing to my piece in the wall gallery at the show. (Thanks for the photo Marg.)

Yes, it was THAT crowded!

Thanks, Dominick, for catching this Studio 1482 selfie!

It was a nice chance to celebrate and see what our fellow illustrators have been up to this past year on the walls of the exhibition: Some amazing art, ranging from well-established illustrators to young up-and-comers. I feel honored to be included among such talent – thank you again to the jury and to American Illustration for the opportunity!
