CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL ILLUSTRATIONS

Transition screen for the game wall at the hospital: icons of NYC.

About a year ago, the talented Matthew McNerney, then a design director at Potion, asked me if I’d like to come in and do some concept art for a cool new project he and his cohorts were cooking up. I’m so happy to be finally able to post some of the work I’ve been doing on my “secret” project since then: illustrations for an interactive game wall for the Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, in NYU Langone’s new Kimmel Pavilion building in New York, put together by the awesome team of designers and developers at Potion Design.

It’s also a digital tour of NYC, for kids who can’t leave the hospital.

I’ll be posting more in the coming weeks, as the project is still in the final stages of installation, but here is a sneak preview of the Bronx Zoo jungle scene:

“Jungle Scene” from the Bronx Zoo. Because of the nature of interactive design, all of these pieces had to be drawn separately and assembled in dimension. Thanks to designer Edyta Lewicka who had a hand in the layout as well. The Macaw and Chimp are two of the six characters that live in the Bronx Zoo scenes.
My family and friends know how scarce I’ve been, these last six months especially, spending many many hours in my studio. This project has been a lot of work, but it’s also been a labor of love. It’s so gratifying to think that these games might bring a smile to a sick child.
Click this link to see a video of the characters dancing in one of the other Bronx Zoo scenes, at the Birdhouse:

Some of the talented people at Potion who I’ve had the pleasure to work on this project with besides Matthew McNerney (who has since moved to another firm) are: Potion Principal Phillip Tiongson, Steph Goralnick (Creative Lead), Nikolai Soudek (Senior Producer), Keith Madden (Producer), Edyta Lewicka (Senior Designer),  Tamar Ziv (Senior Developer), Cathy Sun (Designer), Tim Sun (Developer), Adnan Agha (Developer), and many others.
3D modeling done by the talented Joseph Grundfast; Sound/music design by Youtoocanwoo and Mirrortone Studios. Brooklyn scene powered by Mental Canvas.
I’m very proud of this work and can’t wait to post more, including some of the process – a lot to organize!
